2010’s Top Baby Names Released by Service Alberta

A list of the most popular names for babies in Alberta, Canada has been released by Service Alberta.

Among boys the top name was Liam in 2010. Following Liam in descending order were Ethan, Logan, Alexander, and Lucas for the top five most popular boy names. Ethan had previously been the favored name for boys for nine years in a row.

Some creative names for boys were noted in the records such as Boomer, Duramax, and Miracle. A small number of boys were also named after the celebrities Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix, and John Lennon.

Emma was the most popular girl name in 2010. Olivia was second after dropping from the number one spot in the previous year’s rankings. Emily, Isabella, and Sophia rounded out the top-five girls’ names. Some of the unusual names for girls included Bliss, Infinity, and Soda.

Altogether 50,602 babies were born in Alberta during 2010, a decline from 2009’s record total of 51,498 births.

Minister of Service Alberta, Heather Klimchuk, provided a statement along with the data release. Klimchuk highlighted Alberta’s family-oriented atmosphere, saying the number of births indicated people believed Alberta has a strong future.
