Mother Gives Birth to Baby at Racetrack
Katie Arnold was born on Friday, September 14, 2012 at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway to her mother Shawna and her boyfriend, according to reports.
The family was driving from Belmont to Concord Hospital, but little Katie was not going to wait. The boyfriend realized they were not going to make it to the hospital on time and pulled into the speedway.
“He’s like, ‘I can’t drive any faster, I can’t drive any faster,’ and I’m like, ‘I’m not going to make it, I’m not going to make it,'” Shawna Arnold told KSLA. “And I had a contraction, and I stood up in the back seat on my knees facing the back, and I said, ‘I’m not going to make it. My water just broke.'”
The parents delivered Katie by themselves in their car, then the boyfriend went to get help.
Fortunately for mother and baby, a motorcycle event was going on at the facility. Tom Blanchette, the director of the raceway, assisted at the scene.
A health official at the track then came to help, and the couple and the baby were taken to a hospital.
“There was an EMT there that happened to be wonderful, he’s a great EMT, and he knew what he was doing. He made me feel comfortable, he made me feel safe,”
Mother and baby appear to be doing well. Speedway General Manager Jerry Gappens gave the baby two tickets to NASCAR events at the facility for life so she can return to her place of birth.
“She’ll be up there every year probably to watch at least a race.”
