Eating Walnuts Boosts Sperm Count: Study

There’s good news for men who want to become fathers.

Recent scientific research has shown that eating walnuts on a daily basis not only increases sperm count but also the quality and movement of the sperm as well.

A study conducted at the University of California Los Angeles and partially paid for by the California Walnut Commission concluded that men who consumed at least half a cup of walnuts daily for a period of three months showed noticeable improvement in the quality of their sperm, with fewer abnormalities occuring.

Men selected for the study ranged in age from 21 to 35. One half of the group was advised to consume no tree nuts of any kind during the three month testing period, while the other half consumed the recommended amount of raw walnuts on a daily basis.

Why Walnuts?

Researchers chose walnuts because they are a major source of ‘good’ polyunsaturated fats, the Time of India reported. Walnuts are rich in omega 3 and omega 6 — also found in oily fish — which are thought to be good for sperm development and function but are lacking in Western diets.

This recent finding is likely to help increase walnut sales since more than 70 million worldwide are affected by infertility issues.

“It would be relatively easy to poke fun at studies like this, but there is increasing evidence to show that aspects of a man’s diet can affect the number and quality of sperm produced by his testicles,” Dr. Allan Pacey, senior lecturer in andrology at the University of Sheffield, said to the BBC.

The study was published on Aug. 15 in Biology of Reproduction.
