Ohio Couple Expecting Twins Via Surrogate After Embryo Mix-Up

Carolyn and Sean Savage are excited to be expecting twins via a surrogate, especially after an in vitro fertilization mistake left Carolyn pregnant with a baby that wasn’t biologically hers in 2008.

In 2008, the couple turned to in vitro fertilization after a heartbreaking series of miscarriages. With three children, and hoping for a fourth, Carolyn discovered she was pregnant after under-going the procedure – only to find out that a mix-up had left her pregnant with another couple’s baby. She was given three options: terminate the pregnancy, file for custody of the baby, or continue on with the pregnancy and hand the baby over to his biological parents. Citing her strong Catholic faith, Carolyn chose to have the baby and give him to his parents.

After the mix-up, the couple decided to try for their fourth child via a surrogate, Jennifer. The first attempt ended in a miscarriage, but Jennifer is now 19 weeks pregnant with the Savage’s twins.

Both the Savages and the biological parents of the boy Carolyn Savage was pregnant with, Shannon and Paul Morell, have written books about the ordeal. The Savages wrote the 2011 book Inconceivable: A Medical Mistake, the Baby We Couldn’t Keep, and Our Choice to Deliver the Ultimate Gift, and the Morells wrote the 2010 book “Misconception”.
