Two Chubby Colombian Babies Have Become Weight Loss Buddies
Bogota, Columbia – Something has gone horribly wrong with the 10-month-old babies known as Isabela Caicedo and Santiago Mendoza. They each have been fed into a state of morbid obesity and weigh a combined 41 kilograms (~91 lbs)! Thankfully, a charitable foundation dedicated to combating infant obesity called the Gorditos de Corazon Foundation (Chubby Heart) is helping manage the toddler’s diet with the aim of reducing their weight to healthy levels for their age.
It isn’t clear exactly what went wrong with the children. In Santiago’s case, his mother Eunice Fandiño says that he was incessantly beckoning her for food. That is to be expected with a newborn. However, it isn’t clear what she was feeding him either. Could he have soared 21 kilograms (~46 lbs) on breast milk? Was he fed liquid McDonald’s Happy Meals and milk shakes for baby formula? Either way, he tipped the scales at 42 pounds after just 8 months. In desperation, she is allowing the foundation to manage his diet which program appears to be a residency program. In one touching photograph of the two babies on opposite sides of Salvador Palacios, the foundation’s director, the babies appear to be junior sumo wrestlers.
For Santiago, the diet is slowing working. He has lost 1.6 kilos (~3.5 lbs) and is expected to make a full recovery to a healthy weight. Still, it will be upwards of eight months before he has been restored to a natural weight for his age. There is no question though that this program will greatly prolonging the lives of these babies by helping them avoid a host of obesity-related illnesses. Gorditos de Corazon says they have been able to forge working relationships with other like-minded organizations around the world to help combat the growing epidemic of childhood obesity.
